Where do the SAVANNAH LOCALS Eat?

When friends visit our area, they want to know where to eat. We have often discussed places to go, from a LOCAL viewpoint, meaning NO TOURIST TRAPS,…Just Good Food!

I keep a list on my phone, so that when someone mentions a new place, I can add that to my list. When I go somewhere, I move it to the bottom of my list and then note the date, just because! When we are trying to figure out where to eat….. I just pull up my list!

I want to identify a few of our favorites, and I’d be glad to take some suggestions, so that we can try a few more places.

THE GROVE
301 W. Congress Street, Savannah

Casual bar & restaurant with rooftop views in the heart of Savannah’s City Market; Great drinks, cheese tray (my fav!) and overall menu.  Prices aren’t over the top like some places you’ll see on the river front.

THE PUBLIC KITCHEN & BAR
Savannah, Downtown

Casual fare with menus updated monthly, so make sure you check out their website for changes.  This is because of their FARM TO TABLE mission.  I’m in love with their Grilled Pork Chops and whatever seasonal sides they have available.  Yum!

LITTLE DUCK DINER
Savannah, GA (City Market)

Vintage Chic Diner,…there is so much to choose from, but I pick the Pork Bowl every time!  I wish I could figure out how they make the tastes blend so well….I’d love to make this at home.

They have breakfast, lunch, and dinner and fantastic desserts!  Their Blueberry Pie is the Bomb!

TREYLOR PARK or HITCH
Savannah, gA, Downtown

Bar food with a twist…like nachos,…made with waffle fries instead of chips; avocado fries (yes please); and peanut butter -n- jelly wings.  My favorite is their Cheese Plate because it is so big, I can use it as my meal,… as long as I’m willing to battle my friends to stop their nibbling!

THE BLACK RABBIT
Savannah, GA

Sandwiches that you won’t believe. They have a BUTTERED PIG SANDWICH with Spicy Pork Sausage, Apple butter, cream cheese, and cheddar Grilled on a Bolillo Roll.  They have lots of menu changes so keep up with their social media for your favorites.

CRYSTAL BEER PARLOR
Savannah, GA

A classic in Savannah! Everything from Bar food to fantastic seafood! You must try the Crab Stew with any meal. This place has been in business so long, that I had my “first-ever date”  here!  Family-friendly, despite the name!

OLYMPIA CAFE
Riverstreet, Savannah, GA

Serving fresh and local cuisine before it was trendy… you can have some authentic Greek specialties and amazing seafood! You can stick to the standard Greek fare and have a GYRO, or have some of their fantastic local catches! Must add the flaming cheese to your order!  The location is great too… watch the ships come in and out of the port after dinner.

THE WYLD DOCK BAR
Skidaway Road, Savannah

Even if the food was terrible, the view would be worth the trip (but the food is fantastic). Creative Southern and Seafood dishes, with river views, with changing menus due to the seasonality of their fresh seafood.  Their menu is small, so make sure your picky eaters will be satisfied before you head out there.

LIZZY'S BURGER BAR & GRILL
Riverstreet, Savannah, GA

Burgers, Seafood and some Mexican food options, all on Riverstreet in an 1800’s two-story warehouse.  There is something for everyone here, and even some “adult” milkshakes that make the hot Savannah Days a little more tolerable.

THE SHELLHOUSE
Savannah, I-95 & 204

This is the only one that I’ve listed that is not in the Downtown Savannah Area. I worked here as a teenager before college and found out that I was allergic to Shrimp and Crab. Fast forward 20 years, and further testing showed that I could eat Crab. Having grown up seeing the food at the Shellhouse, I thought it was all the same. I ordered some Snow Crab legs in Atlanta, and was saddened by the size of them. I didn’t know they weren’t all created alike. In the past few years, they added lots of options for ‘land lovers”.

GET THE SHRIMP/SNOWCRAB COMBO, or the PLATTER if you have a big appetite!

THE ORDINARY PUB
Savannah, GA - Broughton St.

You might miss this one if you don’t have your GPS! This restaurant is located in the basement of the Old Sears Building on Broughton Street.  The address is even interesting…. it is 217-1/2, as an afterthought! I don’t know why it took me so long to try this one, but when I did, I came home and added this to my list.

The Fried Green Tomato Caprese is an appetizer that may cause fights at the table (pictured).  I was excited to see a great list of drinks including a GIANT MULE, that you have to share (literally, they won’t let you order it unless you have 3 people!).  The Southern Fried Bison was surprisingly good and was definitely needing a to-go box for the leftovers.

I’m always ready to try some more places, so just shoot me an email if you have any suggestions.

Savannah is such a great place to enjoy some great food in between your ghost tour and historic exploration.

Yes,.. that is yummy! That is at TREYLOR PARK and HITCH. They have the same menu (typically)… if you want an easier time parking, go to HITCH because it is further from Bay Street. They have such a great TWIST on basic bar food!
